Introduction to the Malaysia Businesses Sustainability Pulse Survey 2022

The Covid-19 pandemic has been a wake-up call to address the need for more sustainable practices. As the world moves beyond Covid-19 to an endemic phase, demand for positive ESG behavior is stronger than ever among global and ASEAN’s regulators, investors and businesses, where its prioritisation is not only perceived as a risk mitigation measure, but also as an opportunity to tap into the multi-trillion green economy. There are also a number of measures initiated by the Malaysian government in its commitment towards accelerating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as articulating its vision to becoming a carbon neutral nation by 2050 and incentivizing sustainability actions through taxes and grants.

Data is expected to play a pivotal role in sustainable development in the public and private sphere. Policymakers require data to understand where companies are heading, how they are managing sustainability, what motivates them, and to make informed decisions on ways to craft better policies to assist them on their sustainability journey. In addition, the democratisation of sustainability data enables business decision makers and financial institutions to benchmark themselves against their peers and provide relevant sustainable financing instruments.

Despite the tremendous opportunities which ESG data bring to improve Malaysia’s sustainability landscape, its availability (especially private sector ESG data) remains scarce. Given the crucial role for business organisations to drive the country to a more sustainable future, the initiative titled Malaysia Businesses Sustainability Pulse Survey 2022 is a timely project.

Led by UN Global Compact Network Malaysia & Brunei (UNGCMYB) in collaboration with Nottingham University Business School (NUBS), Bursa Malaysia, MATRADE and MDEC, the project aims to gain an understanding of the extent of readiness of Malaysian businesses in adopting, measuring, managing, and monitoring sustainability within their respective organisations. The final report is expected to be used by policy makers and business leaders for benchmarking purposes, and to develop more effective policy making and incentivisation mechanisms to improve Malaysia’s sustainability landscape.

This survey will focus on achieving the following objectives :

To identify and compare the various sustainability-related practices undertaken by various Malaysian private sector organisations

To highlight areas of good practice and actions for sustainability among Malaysian private sector

To identify areas of improvement among private sectors and required support from regulators
