About the event

Organized by UN Global Compact Network Malaysia & Brunei and United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)

2022 is the critical year to build on the momentum coming off COP26 and continue to encourage nations, business and civil society to boost climate action. In the words of UN Climate Change Executive Secretary, Patricia Espinosa, “I believe that at COP26, Parties built a bridge between good intentions and measurable actions to lower emissions, increase resilience and provide much-needed finance”

In this regard, to help accelerate meaningful progress towards halving global emissions by 2030, and to ensure the integrity of the campaign, Race to Zero established a minimum floor for robust net zero commitments. This included introducing the Starting Line Criteria (known as the 4 P’s, requiring members to Pledge, Plan, Proceed and Publish, as well as conditions on scope, sinks and credits, and equity and empowerment), as well as publishing an interpretation guide and a lexicon. Race to Zero has committed to annually strengthen, clarify and update these criteria documents to continue driving upward convergence toward the continually evolving frontier of best practice around net zero targets and recently kicked off the process for 2022.

To accelerate a sustainable transition to a 1.5 degree, climate-resilient and healthy future, we need everyone on board, including cities, regions, financial institutions, civil society, and businesses - the private sector being a key lever to transform our economies and society. However, stakeholders in developing countries need additional support, resources, and tools to take action to mitigate and adapt to the changing climate according to their context.

In recognition of such needs, UNFCCC/IGES Regional Collaboration Centre for Asia and the Pacific (RCC Bangkok) and the team of the High-Level Champions, in partnership with UN Global Compact Network Malaysia & Brunei (UNGCMYB), will co-host an informative session to build capacity for network members to understand climate pledges and take ambitious climate action.

This informative session will help set the scene and provide network members the opportunity to raise questions to enhance their understanding of the different climate pledges. It will also aim to advance knowledge on climate reporting with necessary support and resources to make ambitious commitments to joining the Race to Zero campaign and other initiatives and taking rigorous climate action at the SBTi Symposium: The Race To Zero in April 2022.

Objectives

  1. To raise awareness on the challenges posed by climate change, the role of non-State actors in achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement, how to set ambitious and science-based net-zero targets, how to develop and implement a credible plan to accelerate the transition, and the business benefits of doing so.
  2. To provide access to useful resources to help businesses take transformational action with the overall purpose to join the Race to Zero.
  3. To receive feedback from participants on how to ensure initiatives and campaigns such as the Race to Zero appropriately take into account regional and developing country context
